the revolution will be SYNthesized
Recently I came across elbs, a new tool for building cross-platform Debian file systems. Essentially it is a wrapper around debootstrap, taking care of most of the heavy lifting for you. I'll go through the steps I followed to build, flash and boot a Debian etch file system on the cm-x270.
A new and improved resyn.net is in the making!
Apologies to anyone who has been, or is continuing to check my site for updates, since I haven't posted anything in about 8 months. Yes, there will be Emili updates, but I've decided to focus on stuff I learn about Linux and other open source projects, which is how I've made a living for the last three years. :)
Stay tuned!
Yes, it may be hard to believe, but today is in fact, Emili's first birthday!
Jen took the day off to be with her, but unfortunately I didn't have that luxury. Between the three of us being sick off and on for the last couple of weeks, I've missed a lot of work, and therefore thought it best not to take the day off.
We don't have any big plans for tonight, other than my sister's family stopping by. This Sunday however, we're throwing a big bash which you (in the vicinity) should have already been invited to.
Emili is walking now! I haven't had time to upload pictures or videos for so long, but eventually they will make their way up for you all to see.
Although, I did find a few minutes to upload some pics of my first brewing attempt! This was a few weeks ago, it's in bottles now, and I really hope it gets better with age, because right now I'm really not a fan. Oh well, there's always next time!
We came up with the title "Emili with an I -PA" ;)
Going well over a month without an update once again! Am I going for a record?
Emili is doing fantasmicly. Crawling, standing up (well, while holding onto something), eating "normal" food, and wreaking far more havoc than ever before in her lifetime. Given this newfound mobility, when left to her own devices, she will instantly find the most hazardous and/or germ-ridden items in her vicinity and proceed to eat and/or stick her fingers into said item.
Onto the videos and pictures!
Emi enjoys her cousin's bouncer:
Some photos from the last few months, including a couple from Jen's mom's wedding, and Emi demonstrating her l33t h4x0r skillz:

| Emili 7-9 months |
On the work front, things are challenging and busy, which is good, but I hope things will tone down a bit once we ship this new product...
On the beer front, Stone is in NH! Including... wait for it! ... The Arrogant Bastard!! As well as their pale ale, IPA, "ruination" IPA, and smoked porter. Jen and I went to a Stone "kickoff" event at a bar in Manchester lat night where they had all 5 on tap. I enjoyed a pint of the Ruination IPA.
Hey, it's almost that time of year again... Who's making the trip back to NH in a couple months?
Clearly she's been scarred for life.
This video made possible by our new camcorder, and Mike and Heidi's "Lambics and Lunch" event yesterday, which was a lot of fun.
I'm pretty excited about this camcorder, for the obvious "proud parent" reasons, and it gives me an excuse to finally learn Cinelerra.
So we were at the Hopkington Fair today, when these two showed up:
Believe it or not, that's Hillary and Bill in the crowd... somewhere.
After that they went for some apple crisp!
Time for a post months in the making! I doubt it will be worth the wait...
I thought I would jot down some notes on movies I've seen recently and would recommend to anyone reading this (both of you!):
Primer - Two engineers accidentally invent a time machine. Sound simple? Just look at the time line! Easily one of the best movies I've seen in the past few years. The fact that it only cost $7,000 to make gives me hope that anyone with a good idea can finally make a movie that stands up to Hollywood.
Children of Men - My personal favorite of '06. It's unlikely you haven't heard of it. But if you have yet to seen it, what are you waiting for?
This Film Is Not Yet Rated - A close second to my favorite movie of '06. Everyone needs to see this movie. The MPAA is clearly a destructive entity, and needs to be stopped, now.
District B13 - Does Luc Besson ever do (or write, in this case) anything wrong? Lots of parkour and kicking/punching enjoyment.
Pan's Labyrinth - There is no question, Guillermo del Toro can do no wrong. All of the reviews I read were right, this is Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups. A must-see for all.
The Fountain - Did anyone else follow the drama? It doesn't quite live up to the expectations I had, but it's still visually incredible, and definitely worth a watch.
Maxed Out - Credit card companies are pure evil, but you probably already knew that. In case you or someone you know needs a reminder, here you go.
Jesus Camp - I haven't been scared by a horror movie in at least 10 years. This movie terrifies me infinitely more than In the Mouth of Madness ever did. Parents who brainwash their children like this need jail time.
The Host - When was the last time you saw a decent monster movie? Well, this is a great one, although it's more of a family drama that just happens to have a huge lizard-ish creature eating everyone.
Movies I'm looking out for:
Sunshine
Who Killed the Electric Car
Before the Music Dies (www.beforethemusicdies.com)
The King of Kong
Good Copy Bad Copy (it's free!)
And no post would be complete without a link to more Emili photos!
This past weekend we had the good fortune of obtaining a free hotel room in Martha's Vineyard! One of Jen's friends was heading down with her husband for their anniversary (they bought a time share), but they couldn't make it until during the week, so they offered it to us for the weekend. Neither of us had been there, and of course, neither had Emili, so we thought it would make a good first trip for her.
Now, we've been to an island or two in the past, but never by ferry. Of course, our first concern was how much they charge to bring a car on the ferry... Jen's initial assessment based on their website was that it would cost $80. Not exactly cheap, but we figured it would be worth it considering the slim odds of us ever getting a free hotel room down there again.
So we get down there (Emi slept for about 2 of the 2.5 hour drive surprisingly), and they tell us that it is not $80 to take your car on the ferry, but $156! It turns out that they charge you $80 for the car, $30 per person (thankfully Emi doesn't qualify as a "person" yet), plus tax. The only alternative to paying the full amount at this point would be to drive back a mile or two to their parking lot, take a bus back to the ferry, take the ferry to the island, then somehow try to figure out how to get around the island with all of our luggage plus Emili. Needless to say, we sucked it up and paid it.
Even though we were only there for one night, I think it ended up being worth it. We arrived on the island Saturday night around 6. For dinner we checked out the Offshore Ale Co.. I had a pint of their IPA, then something called the "Hop Goddess", both were exceptionally good. Sunday was spent balancing walks around the island, various shops and beaches, with getting Emili fed and changed when necessary. The weather was awesome on Sunday as well.
Time for some pictures:
More here.
Two weeks ago was Emi's baptism. It was actually a really good time, since we had my niece baptized at the same time, and lots of family and friends came up for it. There are quite a few pictures that I'll go through at some point and upload.
And finally, Emi is most likely beginning to "teethe", for which I present this evidence:
